Multiple outlets reported over the weekend that the “Euphoria” star registered as a Republican voter in Florida just months before Donald Trump took on his second presidential term.
The actor has been registered to the Republican Party of Florida since June 2024, Buzzfeed confirmed after viewing publicly available voter registration records.
Reps for Sweeney didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
Sweeney has faced scrutiny in the past week over her ad with the clothing company.
In one video for the “great jeans” campaign, Sweeney, who has blue eyes and blonde hair, says, “Genes are passed down from parent to offspring, often determining traits like eye color, personality, and even hair color. My jeans are blue.”
Social media users slammed the ad’s wordplay, accusing its messaging of glorifying whiteness. Others linked the ad to eugenics, the racist and inaccurate theory that human genetics can be improved through selective and controlled breeding of populations.
The backlash intensified after White House communications director Steven Cheung defended the ad on X, formerly Twitter.
“Cancel culture run amok,” Cheung wrote in a July 29 tweet alongside a screenshot of an MSNBC op-ed titled “Sydney Sweeney’s ad shows an unbridled cultural shift toward whiteness.”
Cheung added: “This warped, moronic, and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024. They’re tired of this bullshit.”
American Eagle addressed the discourse over the ad in a statement on its Instagram account.
“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,” the statement read. “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”

The “Anyone but You” star responded to the chatter by asking social media users to “stop making assumptions.”
“You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my moms milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention,” Sweeney wrote in an Aug 2022 post on X, formerly Twitter. “Please stop making assumptions.”
