Israeli troops clashed with Hamas fighters in Gaza on Wednesday as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he was accelerating the military operation to seize Gaza City, the enclave’s biggest urban centre, despite international criticism of an assault likely to force the displacement of many more Palestinians.
