Assistant Director Dies During Shoot Of ‘Emily In Paris’ In Venice

Diego Borella, an assistant director for the Netflix series “Emily In Paris,” has died at the age of 47.

Borella collapsed on set in Venice, Italy, at the Hotel Danieli and was pronounced dead around 7 p.m. on Thursday. The news was confirmed by multiple international outlets and later in a statement from Paramount Television Studios, obtained by Dateline.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the ‘Emily in Paris’ production family,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Borella was a “well-regarded professional” who honed his craft in cities such as Rome, New York and London. The outlet also reported that medical staff were present on the scene, but their efforts to revive Borella were unsuccessful. The Italian publication noted that Borella may have died from a sudden heart attack.

Production was temporarily halted following Borella’s death, but resumed on Saturday.

“Our ambulance arrived at 18.42 (on Thursday evening). Medics made attempts to resuscitate him. But in the end all efforts proved fruitless. At around 19.30, he was pronounced deceased,” the outlet noted.

The news comes just days after Netflix released “first look images” from the upcoming season. Filming for the upcoming season kicked off in May and was ushered in by the show’s official Instagram account featuring a selfie of the series’ star Lily Collins.

The fifth season of “Emily in Paris” will debut on Netflix on Dec. 18.
