The Tar Heels received a poor, early-season review from this popular media outlet.
When the North Carolina Tar Heels initially hired Bill Belichick to be their next head football coach, fans immediately hoped for instant success.
Not too unreasonable, right? Belichick won eight Super Bowls during his time in the NFL: two as the New York Giants‘ defensive coordinator, then two more as the New England Patriots‘ head coach.
Through four weeks of the 2025 college football season, UNC is 2-2 and lacking a quality victory on its schedule, while getting blown out by two Big 12 programs.
Because of its early-season disappointment, North Carolina is listed amongst USA TODAY Sports’ ACC frauds, along with Clemson and SMU.
“Unless you’re a degenerate gambler or own a closet full of Carolina blue, you might not have realized Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels played this weekend,” college football columnist Blake Toppmeyer wrote. “The Labor Day hype turned to crickets. The Tar Heels gained just 217 yards, which would be considered a feat at Florida, but is bad just about anywhere else. Quarterback Gio Lopez exited in the second half with an apparent leg injury.”
Clemson (1-3, 0-2 ACC) barely beat Troy, but has losses against LSU, Syracuse and Georgia Tech on its resume. SMU (2-2), which made its first College Football Playoff appearance in 2024, already lost to both Baylor and TCU.
UNC and Clemson will open conference play against each other on Saturday, October 4 at 12 p.m. North Carolina won’t turn into an ACC contender if it wins this matchup, but it can further prove the Tigers as ACC frauds.
