The ongoing Trumpworld meltdown over President Donald Trump’s escalator snafu at the United Nations provided Seth Meyers with plenty of comic fodder on Thursday’s episode of “Late Night.”
Meyers mercilessly mocked the over-the-top anger from conservatives and Trump himself, who in recent days have painted the seemingly innocuous moment (which even the U.N. said was actually down to a White House aide triggering a safety mechanism) as being part of a wide-ranging conspiracy against the president.
“As absurd as this is, it’s also deeply revealing,” Meyers said of the exaggerated reaction. “Everywhere they look, MAGA sees a shadowy conspiracy, whether it’s escalators, climate change or elections they don’t win.”
“Reality doesn’t conform to their preexisting agendas,” he added. “So they have to imagine a sinister fantasy in which scientists are making up a climate change hoax, where Democrats are stuffing ballot boxes with fraudulent votes and where saboteurs are orchestrating a secretive, far-reaching plot that ends with an escalator slightly lurching forward.”
