Nearly 600,000 people participated in nationwide protests across France on Thursday, according to the CGT union, responding to a strike call by trade unions opposing proposed spending cuts in next year’s budget. The French interior ministry offered a lower estimate, reporting around 195,000 protesters, including 24,000 in Paris.
