The Los Angeles Dodgers have quickly pushed the Philadelphia Phillies to the brink of elimination. The Dodgers are up 2-0 in the best-of-five NLDS against the Phillies, and L.A. will have the chance to close things out at home later this week.
The Dodgers held on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park for a 4-3 win. Blake Snell was terrific, striking out nine hitters in six scoreless innings against the Phillies. The home team mounted a ninth-inning rally that saw the Dodgers’ lead trimmed to one and got the tying run 90 feet away, but Roki Sasaki got Trea Turner to ground out to earn a one-out save.
The Dodgers and Phillies entered the series as the owners of the best World Series title odds, and whoever prevails in this best-of-five series will advance to the NLCS, where they’ll play for the pennant. Game 3 storylines
Dodgers: Yoshinobu Yamamoto will be making his second start of the postseason after delivering 6 ⅔ shutout innings in a win against the Cincinnati Reds during the Wild Card Series. A victory would advance the Dodgers to the NLCS for the fourth time in the last six Octobers.
Phillies: The stakes are simple: the Phillies need a win to keep their season alive. They also need the top of their order to play like they did throughout the regular season. Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Bryce Harper are a combined 2 for 21 with zero extra-base hits, 11 strikeouts, and just two walks through the first two games of this series.
Game 3 prediction
Although I picked the Dodgers to win this series, I’m hoping that this one goes the distance. As such, I’m picking the Phillies’ offense to score just enough against Yoshinobu Yamamoto to secure a victory. Pick: Phillies (+129)
