Seth Meyers called out Donald Trump for flip-flopping on Monday after the president initially flagged an “unprecedented opportunity” to target “Democrat Agencies” and to lay off Democrat federal workers in the government shutdown.
“Alright, first of all, what do you mean, Democrat agencies? Is there a Federal Department of Wokeness I’m not aware of?” quipped the “Late Night” host.
Meyers, after playing a supercut of right-wingers “crowing” about the shutdown, highlighted a Washington Post poll showing that more Americans blame Trump and congressional Republicans for the shutdown than Democrats.
He went on to argue that Trump suddenly “changed his tune” on the possibility of layoffs before playing a clip of the president pinning the blame on Democrats for any such layoffs over the weekend.
“They’re Democrat layoffs, they’re causing it. We’re ready to go back,” Trump. “It’s up to them. Anybody laid off, that’s because of the Democrats.”
Meyers swiftly slammed the president over his 180.
“This is the world we’re living in, the same guy who said he loves the shutdown because it lets him fire Democrats’ also says the shutdown is the Democrats fault because he has to fire people,” Meyers said.
“He’s talking about this shutdown the way Sméagol talks about the One Ring.”
He then launched into an impression of the iconic “Lord of the Rings” character’s Sméagol — and Gollum — personas.
“We loves the shutdown, we can fire Democrats,” Meyers began.
“No, we hates the shutdown! We hate the shutdown!”
