Getting a divorce can be a traumatic experience, but luckily, actor Malin Akerman had a friend who traveled down the road and back again with her during this difficult chapter in her life.
During a panel about female friendships at Universal Studios on Saturday, Akerman talked about her experience and said her best friend made it “one of the most joyful” moments of her life despite everything that was going on.
In 2013, Akerman divorced then-husband Roberto Zincone in November — just months after the couple welcomed their son, Sebastian, in April.
“So I have a son who’s 12-years-old. But when he was 4-months-old, his father and I got a divorce,” Akerman revealed, according to People. “It was out of nowhere. It’s interesting what happens when you have kids and how everything just shifts and people aren’t who they seem to be.”
The actor mentioned she and her friend had known each other since middle school, and her friend had moved from Toronto to support her.
“She came and moved in and helped me raise my son for the first year and a half of his life,” she said.

“It was sensational because it was one of the hardest times in my life and also one of the most joyful times of my life because I had just had a baby,” Akerman continued. “And that’s shocking when they let you take a human home.”
Akerman emphasized the importance of community and said her friend was the “silver lining” during this time. She told the outlet she recommends everyone should raise their kids with their best friends.
“We made it such a fun time and it was incredible to have that in this tainted moment of darkness,” she said.
The actor recently captured hearts with her portrayal of Margo Banks in the Netflix series, “Hunting Wives.”
In a short clip from UsWeekly, Akerman revealed she’ll begin filming the second season of the show on Nov. 9.
During a recent interview with TODAY, Akerman shared that as a mother herself, filming a scene about abortions and domestic violence was one that left her in tears during the filming of the series.
