Within Week 6 of Boone County high school football, the top performers shined on the road, helping their teams to victory.
Multiple players contributed to Hickman’s milestone victory over Jefferson City. Between Southern Boone and Tolton, it was their senior quarterbacks and offensive playmakers who scored in multiple ways, helping both teams bounce back to improve in the win column.
Alijah Bussey, Bredun Bursey, Jeyshan Scott, and Prince Collins, Hickman
On Friday night, Hickman collected its largest victory over Jefferson City in decades. The Kewpies defeated the Jays 41-6 in the state capital. It was a collective effort that helped head coach Justin Conyers collect his 100th career victory.
Running back Prince Collins scored three times for Hickman and has filled in nicely for injured running back Ra’Jon Rayner. All came from different distances. Collings scored on touchdown runs of 13, 27, and 71 yards.
Quarterback Bredun Bursey, who’s been leading the Kewpies offense for two years, made sure to find the end zone. The junior threw a long 70-plus yard score to senior wide receiver Alijah Bussey. Bursey also ran for one as well for a yard out, making it a 41-6 ballgame with under eight minutes to play. Defensively, Jeyshan Scott recorded an interception return for a touchdown in the winning effort to help the Kewpies improve to 5-1, its first winning season since 2012.
Benjamin Schroeder and Dominik Abadi, Tolton
Tolton quarterback Dominik Abadi came up big for the Trailblazers in their 24-21 win over St. Francis Borgia. The senior quarterback, on 4th and 6, scrambled for a long gain, dragging multiple defenders inside the 10-yard line. This helped set up Tolton’s first scoring, tying the game at 7-7.
Later in the first half, Abadi tied the game up again, tossing a 27-yard strike to Benjamin Schroeder, who weaved his way into the end zone, making it a 14-14 ballgame. Schroeder put Tolton ahead for good in the second half, 24-21, with a two-yard score.
Jayce Troth and Mason Shearer, Southern Boone
On the road, its important that your quarterback steps up and performs. That’s exactly what Mason Shearer did for the Eagles in their 34-20 victory over Eldon.
Shearer tossed two first-half touchdowns to wide receiver Jayce Troth. The senior signal-caller also scored a pair on the ground from 27 and 39 yards out in the second half. The final 24 minutes of play also saw both Shearer and Troth switch roles as the receiver tossed a short touchdown to his quarterback.
It helped Southern Boone collect its second win of the season, improving to 2-4.
