TORONTO – Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has led the Blue Jays to a 2-0 series lead over the New York Yankees, proving that it actually is possible for a Toronto athlete to perform well in the playoffs despite fan pressure and the media asking him questions.
“Before now I thought it was absolutely impossible for a guy to play well while subject to the constant, and uniquely Toronto pressures of fans expecting him to play well and media asking him questions for 15 minutes after each game,” said fan Mary-Anne Haberstrom. “But when I saw Vladdy hit that grand slam it made me realize it could happen.”
“Actually now that I think about it, the idea that it’s impossible for Toronto players to succeed in the postseason because of our media and fans is actually pretty ridiculous.”
Including his slam Guerrero went 3-3 to start game 2, which was all but over after the fifth inning. That followed Game 1 where he hit a solo homer and made an amazing diving catch to create a double play. He was able to do these things despite the fact that, at regular intervals during the season when he did not play well, some Blue Jays fans said mean things about him on social media.
“Guerrero’s ability to rise above the complaints and play at a high-level is remarkable. To the best of my knowledge he hasn’t even hired a private security team to harass people on instagram who criticize him. I didn’t know you could not do that!” said one reporter who covers baseball and hockey in Toronto.
In related news Guerrero was asked if he had ever talked to members of opposing teams about what it was like to live in that city while still playing in Toronto, and responded “of course not. Who would do that?!”
