Chappell Roan fans rejoice — it seems “The Subway” might finally be here.
Through posters hung in New York City and what appears to be a music video teaser from a fanbase account, the pop star is teasing the release of her next single “The Subway.” The 27-year-old has played the song at multiple festivals but has yet to release a studio version. Roan played it just last month at Primavera Sound.
The posters spotted around New York say, “Going through a break up? Get bangs!” with a picture of Roan. The video, which seemingly has a studio version of “The Subway,” shows a moving truck with a license plate “THE SBWY.” As the truck rolls down the road, the pop star’s signature red hair can be seen blowing in the wind as the truck passes a Saskatchewan welcome sign. The song’s lyrics in the preview say, “I made a promise / if in four months these feelings ain’t gone / well, fuck this city / I’m moving to Saskatchewan.”
Roan’s rollout for the single appears to be similar to her recent “The Giver” rollout. In February, the “Pink Pony Club” singer posted a photo of herself in a suit to Instagram with the caption: “The Lawyer. Ur ex’s worst nightmare + she gets the job DONE.” She then went on to post several more as a lawyer, along with photos of herself as a plumber, a construction worker and a dentist, all with the same theme of her taking on a service worker gig and getting the job done.
While “The Giver” was a classic country-pop track infused with quippy sapphic double entendres, “The Subway,” based on Roan’s past performances of it, is a much more mellow breakup pop track. The song is great showcase of Roan’s vocal range.
More details are not yet known about the song.
