Senegal is celebrating Le Grand Magal, one of Africa’s largest religious gatherings. Millions of worshippers are converging on the city of Touba, in the country’s central-western region, in response to the call of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride Muslim brotherhood. Already recognized as part of Senegal’s national cultural heritage, the event is now seeking inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
