Kurt Russell is getting back in the saddle.
The Tombstone star has joined the cast of the Yellowstone spinoff series The Madison, Entertainment Weekly has learned. Details on Russell’s role were not immediately available.
It’s also unclear whether Russell will star in the forthcoming first season of the neo-Western or in a future season. The Madison reportedly began filming in Montana in August 2024, and shot in Texas in November and December.
David Glasser, the CEO of one of the show’s production companies, 101 Studios, recently told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram that season 2 was set to begin production in the Lone Star State this month, despite the show not receiving an official renewal from Paramount yet.
Buena Vista Pictures
The Madison stars Michelle Pfeiffer, who previously acted alongside Russell in 1988’s Tequila Sunrise. The show, which has been described as “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana,” also stars Patrick J. Adams (Suits), Matthew Fox (Lost), Elle Chapman (A Man Called Otto), Beau Garrett (Firefly Lane), and Amiah Miller (War for the Planet of the Apes).
Russell has a long history with the Western genre. His first credited movie role came in 1964’s Guns of Diablo, which also starred Charles Bronson and Susan Oliver. In 1976, he starred on the TV series The Quest and in its spinoff movie The Long Drive alongside Tim Matheson.
Perhaps Russell’s best-known Western — and one of his most iconic projects to date — was 1993’s Tombstone. In addition to Russell playing legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, rumors have circulated that he directed the film without receiving credit, which his costar Val Kilmer all but confirmed in 2017.
In 2015, Russell starred in Quentin Tarantino’s grisly winter Western The Hateful Eight and also headlined the horror-Western Bone Tomahawk, which featured Fox in a supporting role.
It’s unclear how The Madison will fit into Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding Yellowstone universe, as we don’t know how any of its characters relate to the original series, which starred Kevin Costner as the patriarch of the Dutton cattle ranching dynasty in Montana.

Two Yellowstone spinoffs have aired so far: 1883, which starred Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill; and 1923, which starred Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and Brandon Sklenar.
There are several more offshoots in the works, including Y: Marshals, which will see Luke Grimes reprise his role from the original series in a procedural set to debut on CBS in 2026. Meanwhile, The Dutton Ranch will see Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprise their Yellowstone roles in a series that also stars Ed Harris and Annette Bening. The Paramount Network also announced the development of a 1944 spinoff as well as 6666, which will focus on the Texan Four Sixes ranch.
