Mandy Moore is getting candid about the “outdated” opinions she faced ― including from some health care professionals ― when she welcomed her third child, daughter Louise “Lou” Everett, after turning 40 last year.
The “This is Us” actor appeared on Kylie Kelce’s “Not Gonna Lie” podcast last week. In the chat, she explained her issues with the term “geriatric pregnancy,” a label usually applied to those who get pregnant after age 35.
“At least in my experience, so many of my friends are having kids later in life, whether it’s by choice or it’s by circumstance or biology,” she explained. “I think the thing that I had the most trouble with is just like this system in general kind of treating us as this anomaly that we’re like too old and we’re too complicated or high risk, and really, it’s like, ‘Nope, we’re just human beings.’ I feel like it’s just such an outdated label.”
Moore has been married to Dawes musician Taylor Goldsmith since 2018. In addition to Lou, the couple share sons August “Gus” Harrison, 4, and Oscar “Ozzie” Bennett, 2.
In her chat with Kelce, Moore was quick to clarify that her biggest concern after welcoming her daughter last year was more about “the health care system in general” rather than individual opinions, thus prompting her recent endeavors as a women’s health advocate.
“It feels like such an outdated, one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to just women in general,” she said. “We make up 50% of the population, we give birth to the entire population. I think becoming a mom and going through three pregnancies now… Our bodies are treated as such an afterthought.”
Kelce’s chat with Moore took a more lighthearted turn later on when Moore playfully called out Goldsmith for having never seen 2002’s “A Walk to Remember,” co-starring Shane West.
Based on the 1999 Nicholas Sparks novel, the dramedy hit theaters just one year after Moore made her feature film acting debut with a supporting role in “The Princess Diaries,” and helped prove she could be a box office draw in her own right.
“My husband has still never seen the movie ― I think he lied the other day,” Moore quipped. “Maybe one day we’ll have group viewing with our kids when they get older, and Taylor can watch it for the first time, too.”
