In the Buffyverse, one slayer is chosen every generation — but the same thing cannot be said for TV and film reboots. And yes, Sarah Michelle Gellar has thoughts.
Gellar has been acting since she was 4 years old, but cartwheeled into stardom on the ’90s TV show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” She also starred in the slasher film “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which has gotten the reboot treatment — and “Buffy” is heading for it too.
So it’s not surprising Gellar had a few things to say about criticism of reboots.
“I’ve been fortunate enough that I’ve had work that people remember from all different times, and as an actor, you just hope you do work that not just stands the test of time (and) that people still remember, but they still enjoy,” the actor told USA Today in an interview Thursday.
The “Scooby Doo” star also spoke about the “emotional” pull reboots have for longtime fans.
“If your art that you’ve created is still meaningful and also as the world changes that it still has emotional resonance to the fans, that’s all we could ever ask for,” she said.
Gellar went on to talk about how some actors get “stuck” in a single role or era — but she’s grateful that hasn’t been her story.
“I don’t feel like anyone’s ever done that to me,” she recalled. “It’s not like people only know me from one thing in the ’90s or they only wanna see me as one thing from the ’90s. I’ve been extremely fortunate.”
Earlier this year, Variety reported that a pilot order for the “Buffy” reboot was nearly complete. The revival has been in the works since 2018, and it looks like a new Chosen One is finally stepping into the spotlight. According to the outlet, screenwriters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are on board as writers, showrunners and executive producers.
But not everyone from the original cast will be returning. In August, fan favorite Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase, addressed the speculation.

“I get asked this a lot: ‘Are you doing the reboot?’ And I thought I would address it,” Carpenter said. “I am not in the reboot. I am not in the pilot. I don’t even know if the show has been picked up to go to series. I assume it will be.”
