“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert on Thursday fired back at Vice President JD Vance with a meme that takes the sofa jokes to a whole new level.
Vance earlier in the day had defended President Donald Trump, who has posted racist memes of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) in a sombrero with mariachi music.
“Oh, I think it’s funny,” Vance insisted. “The president’s joking and we’re having a good time.”
Vance then made a “solemn promise” to stop the memes if Jeffries makes a deal with the White House.
That gave Colbert an idea.
“If that’s how we’re doing it, JD, then we here at the ‘Late Show’ also enjoy humor. We’ve created our own funny good-time animation-based-on-something-that-isn’t-real to help end the shutdown,” he said. “Enjoy.”
He rolled a censored video of Vance humping a sofa with a sombrero on his rear ― which one fan turned into a minute-long loop on X:
Last year, rumors flew on social media that Vance had sex with a sofa. It was supposedly based on a passage from his book in which he described doing so, but the book excerpt was fake.
While it wasn’t true, it became fodder for meme makers throughout the 2024 campaign ― and for Colbert and his team right now.
“We’re joking,” Colbert said after rolling the footage. “We’re having a good time.”
Then, he offered Vance a deal ― like the one Vance offered Jeffries.
“If you resign as VP, I won’t keep showing that every chance I get,” Colbert said. “And I definitely won’t put it on all of our socials so people can share it and maybe roll it on a loop during their holiday parties this year.”
