If you’ve read any of my Garmin reviews over the past couple of years then you know that I use the LED flashlight on the watch daily. I’ve been asking for Coros, Suunto, Polar, Apple, and Samsung to include this function on its watches without any luck. Thankfully, Amazfit stepped up and the new Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro sports a two color LED flashlight that competes with Garmin.

In addition to the LED flashlight, the new T-Rex 3 Pro is available in two sizes so everyone can enjoy the watch no matter your wrist size, has an integrated speaker and microphone for hands-free calling and Zepp Flow control, and supports free downloadable maps for navigation that includes snow ski resort maps.
The T-Rex 3 Pro is designed for outdoor adventurers that include trail runners and endurance athletes with its rugged titanium build, sapphire crystal display, long battery life, and durability that includes operating in temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius. The addition of a 44mm model for smaller wrists is a nice addition to the series and while smaller than the 48mm model it still supports up to 19 days with typical usage or 29 hours in precision GPS mode (highest battery consumption mode).
While I wasn’t able to test out trail running myself yet, the T-Rex 3 Pro debuted at UTMB in Chamonix and was worn by at least three Amazfit ambassadors. While the LED flashlight can be activated manually and shine in red and three white levels, it can also be set up as a safety light in your selected activity. The safety light can shine in red or white as a long flash, short flash, gradient, or specified custom frequency. You can also preview the safety light to confirm it will shine as desired during your activity. Amazfit may have implemented the LED flashlight after Garmin’s success, but the company has also added in customization and optimization for the user.
Last year I started downhill skiing again after a 30 year hiatus and now have all of my gear and an Icon pass to tackle the slopes this winter. The T-Rex 3 Pro supports resort skit maps with slope color codes and lift dynamics so I can’t wait for the snow to come so that I can test out the watch in that environment.
The T-Rex 3 Pro provides over 180 sport modes for you to select and customize. It was great to see a dog walking one since that is something my wife and I do regularly. With other watches I have just been selecting walking, but if you walk dogs you know there are bathroom breaks, sudden bursts of energy, and more so it’s nice to see Amazfit provide a more specific common activity.

I am currently testing a Coros Nomad that has extensive fly fishing support so I looked at the T-Rex 3 Pro and found the fishing mode provided by Amazfit supports cast tracking and fish logging, in addition to navigation, heart rate tracking, and more. I highly recommend that you explore your preferred activity settings and customize each for your personal needs.
The T-Rex 3 Pro is a rugged watch with some bulk to support the large capacity battery so it is not the more comfortable watch to sleep with. Thankfully, the Amazfit Helio Strap is a fantastic affordable wearable that fits seamlessly on your wrist or arm to track all of your sleep metrics and then syncs to the Zepp ecosystem. The Helio Ring can also be used for unobtrusive health and wellness tracking when you are not wearing the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro.
I spent a couple of weeks using the 48mm Tactical Black model. The 48mm size will also be available in Black Gold while the smaller 44mm will be available in Q4 in Gold/Gray and Black Gold so keep your eye out for the smaller model in the next couple of months. The T-Rex 3 will continue to be sold at the lower price while the T-Rex 3 Pro provides another size option with the LED flashlight and premium materials.
ZDNET’s buying advice
The one feature I have been looking for another company to launch with in order to compete with Garmin has now appeared as the LED flashlight is present on the top of the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro. The watch launches at a reasonable $400 price with flagship materials, extensive and customizable activity support, and in an ecosystem that offers serious competition to the most popular wearables today.
